OAHN Swine Project: Prevalence of PHEV in growing pig submissions to the AHL (in progress)

Project Lead: Dr. Tim Blackwell

Collaborators:  TBD

Project Proposal

The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of HPEV in the lung tissue of growing pigs using PCR testing.  Lung tissue from pigs submitted to the Animal Health Laboratory in Guelph, either whole carcasses or lung tissue, with and without gross or histologic evidence of respiratory disease will be tested for the presence of HPEV by PCR.  Because HPEV is considered endemic in Ontario swine herds, this surveillance effort will determine whether PHEV is more commonly found in lungs with respiratory disease or whether it is equally prevalent in normal and diseased lung tissue
